Exciting news out of NYC yesterday!
The New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation (HHC) formally announced yesterday the launch of a mandatory employee training on LGBT cultural competence in NYC hospitals. This is exciting work and an amazing step in closing the very real disparity that exists for LGBT people when they try to access healthcare around the country...and I hope that communities and states outside of NYC will soon follow suit and create similar requirements! You can read the full press release, as well as view a sample training video used in the trainings, HERE.
I should give a special shout out here, as well. This is something I have known was coming down the pipeline in NYC for a while now because this entire initiative is being spearheaded by a friend and colleague of mine named Liz Margolies who is the director of the National LGBT Cancer Network. So kudos to her and her organization for their amazing and pioneering work (and for the creation of what is probably my favorite LGBT-sensitivy video for healthcare providers ever)!
