Yesterday a landmark ruling was passed recognizing the rights of our transgender peers.
It is now illegal under federal law to descriminate in employment matters on the basis of gender identity.
This ruling is long overdue and will protect those currently employed and those seeking employment from being denied on the basis of their gender identity.
16 states currently prohibit this type of discrimination but this will now extend that protection to all 50 states under federal law.
Employment is often key to obtaining healthcare which is one of the biggest issues facing those who are transgender. Disparities in healthcare are tied to a number of issues including homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health.
The ruling will open doors to employment and healthcare for transgender individuals.
This is such a giant step forward in the fight for equality for all LGBT people.
