Celebrate National Glaucoma Awareness Month by getting screened and learning the facts about this disease!
What is glaucoma?
A group of diseases that can damage the optic nerve and potentially cause blindness.
Does increased eye pressure mean I have glaucoma?
Not necessarily. However, you may be at risk for glaucoma and should contact your eye care professional and follow their advice.
Who is at risk for glaucoma/when should you screen for glaucoma?
People with diabetes
African-Americans - Age 40 Years Old and older
Everyone over the age of 60 Years Old, especially Mexican Americans
People with a family history of glaucoma
What are the sypmtoms?
At first there is no pain or vision loss which is why the at risk populations above should be screened at least every two years, if not every year.
How do you screen for glaucoma?
Glaucoma is detected through a comprehensive eye exam (including: a visual acuity test, visual field test, dilated eye exam, tonometry, and pachymetry). If you request a comprehensive eye exam it should include a screening. You can always ask your eye care professional if you are being screened for glaucoma if you are unsure.
Does Medicare Cover Glaucoma Screenings
If you fall into one of the high risk categories for glaucoma (see the question about risk above) then Medicare covers an annual comprehensive eye exam.
