Some background: Two years ago, Skyler James fled the U.S. military after being outed by a peer. She was the target of harassment, was given unfair amounts of extra work by superiors, and began receiving threatening letters including a death threat. She feared for her safety and her life and sought a discharge from the army under the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, but she was denied. She was told that her situation would be addressed after her upcoming tour in Afghanistan. So, the military disregarded its own (horrendous) policy to try to send her off to war. Interesting.
