Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people still face significant employment discrimination in this country. We can still be fired from our jobs simply because of our sexual orientation or gender identity. Historically, Congress has responded to protect workers against harmful descrimination based on arbitrary reasons, such as gender, ability, race, or national origin. LGBT people have yet to be protected in this way under federal law.
ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is pending federal legislation that would make employment discrimination based on an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity illegal. Th
e bill protects workers from discriminatory hiring, firing, promotion or compensation practices, as well as retaliation for reporting those practices should they occur.
There will be a hearing on ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act on Thursday, November 5th at 10:00AM. Dr. Jillian T. Weiss, Associate Professor of Law and Society at Ramapo College in New Jersey, will be liveblogging the hearing on http://bilerico.com.
